Great Eastern: A giant of industrial history returns
She was far ahead of her time and is considered one of the most fascinating ships ever built. With this kit of the "Great Eastern" you have a real piece of model building history in your hands. Made with the original tools from 1963, this model represents the beginnings of sophisticated plastic model making. As a strictly limited edition, this ocean giant comes in the classic 1960s packaging - an absolute highlight for collectors who are looking for the nostalgic charm and challenge of historical kits.
Why this vintage kit is in a class of its own
- Historical forms: “Tooling from 1963” – experience the model making technology of a bygone era. Authentic, raw and full of character.
- Imposing dimensions: With a length of 56.7 cm in a scale of 1:388, the enormous size of the original is noticeable on the craft table.
- High collector value: The combination of limitation, historical significance and the true-to-original retro packaging design makes this set a rarity.
- Unique technology: The model shows the Great Eastern's distinctive propulsion combination: huge side paddle wheels, propeller and six masts for sails.
- Challenging project: With 222 parts, this kit is a project for experienced model makers who enjoy bringing a classic to life using skilled craftsmanship.
The construction of the Great Eastern is a voyage of discovery into the era of steam engines. You reconstruct the riveted hull, install the powerful paddle wheel boxes and rig up the five chimneys and the six masts. This model is not just a ship, it is a technical monument to Isambard Kingdom Brunel, the brilliant designer of the 19th century.
Background information
When the Great Eastern was launched in 1858, she was by far the largest ship in the world at 211 meters long - a record that stood for 40 years. She was so huge that she could hold 4,000 passengers and store enough coal to circumnavigate the world without refueling. She later achieved world fame as a cable layer who laid the first permanent transatlantic cable, thereby connecting Europe and America via telecommunications.

For beginners, Revell models with skill level 1 or 2 are recommended. Level 1 includes simple plug-in kits without glue, while level 2 requires basic gluing work. These models have fewer components (usually 20-50 parts) and simple color schemes. Experienced model makers should only start at level 3, as this already requires detailed painting and precise gluing work.
The packaging colors show a basic painting for quick results. However, the construction instructions contain detailed color recommendations for authentic, true-to-scale replicas. Professional model makers use the instructions' extended color palette for more realistic results. This enables both beginners to create simple projects and experts to create detailed replicas.
Revell releases new models and new editions of classic kits every month. Around 60-80 new products are released every year, including airplanes, ships, cars and RC models. The list of new products is updated at the beginning of each month. Collectors and enthusiasts should check the Revell webshop regularly, as limited editions often sell out quickly.
Revell invests significantly in product development, precise injection molds and detailed construction instructions. Each model goes through extensive design processes, tool making and quality control according to the EN 71.5 standard. The higher costs result from licensed original artwork, multilingual instructions and the use of high-quality plastics that enable precise details.
You can obtain spare parts for Revell models from official customer service or authorized dealers. Many parts can be reordered individually, although an exact kit number is required. Alternatively, specialized model building communities offer exchanges. For older, no longer produced models, 3D printing services or aftermarket manufacturers can often help.
The basic equipment includes plastic glue, side cutters, files, basic paints (black, white, gray) and brushes of various sizes. Primer, clear coat and detail brushes are recommended for advanced projects. A cutting mat set and good lighting significantly improve the quality of work. Budget beginners can start well with around 50-80 euros.
Revell RC models are differentiated according to age groups. Ready-to-run models are suitable for ages 8 and up, while kit RC models require experience in model building. Adults benefit from expandable systems and tuning options. The skill level marking helps with selection - RC beginners should start with levels 1-2, even as adults.
The Revell range includes over 400 active models, which is challenging for small retailers in terms of inventory and finances. Specialist retailers tend to focus on popular categories or regional preferences. The official Revell web shop offers the full range, while local dealers often allow special orders. Remaining stocks of older models can often be found in specialized model making shops.
We accept product suggestions via the contact form on the website. Successful proposals take into account market potential, licensability and technical feasibility. Keep in mind that developing new models takes 12-24 months. Detailed suggestions with reference material have a higher chance of success, but due to the high volume, not all ideas can be implemented.
All Revell products comply with the European toy standard and are regularly tested for harmful substances. Safety instructions in the construction instructions are mandatory and particularly concern adhesives and paints. Models below skill level 3 are designed for children aged 10 and over, higher levels require supervision or are only recommended for children aged 14 and over. The CE marking confirms conformity.
