Why Revell model making is more than just a hobby

Model making is a passion that connects generations. When you choose a Revell model, you are not just buying a piece of plastic. You buy yourself valuable time for yourself, deceleration in the often hectic everyday life and the incomparable feeling of pride when you hold the masterpiece you created yourself in your hands at the end. The building process trains your concentration, promotes your fine motor skills and allows you to immerse yourself deeply in technical or historical worlds.

Especially in 2026, when screens dominate our everyday lives, the haptic experience of model building is a wonderful balance. Whether you are reconstructing historical sailing ships, building fast sports cars or diving into distant sci-fi galaxies – Revell offers you an incredible variety. But it is precisely this diversity that can seem overwhelming at first. That's why you'll find out step by step what you need to pay attention to when making your selection in order to avoid frustration and experience maximum crafting fun.

The different construction systems: Find your perfect introduction

Revell understands that not every model builder has the same requirements. That's why there are different systems tailored to different age groups and experience levels. Choosing the right system is the first and most important step on the way to your new project.

1. Quick success: The click system

Have you never built a model before or are you looking for a relaxing project where you don't have to worry about glue stains or brush strokes? Then that is it click system exactly the right thing for you. Here the precisely manufactured components are simply inserted into one another. They hold together extremely stable, without any glue. Another huge advantage: the parts are already printed in multiple colors or dyed through. So you don't necessarily have to paint them. If you want, you can refine the models later with the included stickers or decals (water transfers). This system is ideal for children aged around 10 and up, but also for adults who want to have a visible result on the table quickly after work.

2. Classic model making: gluing, sanding, painting

This is where the real heart of model making beats. With the classic kits, you remove the parts from the casting with a side cutter, clean up the edges, glue them together precisely and give them their final look with a brush or airbrush gun. This method requires more patience, precision, and supplies, but rewards you with models that are almost indistinguishable from the originals. You have full control over aging effects, rust marks and the smallest details. If you choose this option, you can set up your own small workshop at your desk.

3. Pure action: remote-controlled models

Maybe you don't just want to put your model in the display case, but want to experience real action with it? With Revell Control you combine the fascination for technology with fast-paced driving or flying fun. Whether robust RC cars for off-road use, maneuverable quadcopters or detailed boats for your next trip to the lake - this category brings dynamism to your hobby. Many of these models are “Ready-to-Run” (RTR), which means you just have to charge the battery and you can get started right away. Perfect for technology-loving kids and adults who are young at heart.

The Revell level system simply explained

Revell has introduced a transparent level system from 1 to 5 so that you can immediately see when purchasing whether a kit suits your skills. When making your selection, be sure to pay attention to this number, which is clearly printed on every packaging!

  • Level 1: Child-friendly plug-in kits for playing and crafting (e.g. Revellino or Revell First Construction). No previous knowledge necessary, ideal for children aged 4 to 8.
  • Level 2: Kits for beginners with the Easy-Click system. No gluing, no painting. Components are just plugged in. Age rating usually from 10 years.
  • Level 3: The perfect introduction to classic plastic model making. Simple kits for gluing and painting with up to 100 individual parts. Here you will learn the basic techniques.
  • Level 4: For experienced hobbyists. Complex models with up to 150 pieces requiring precise gluing and painting techniques. The focus here is on detail.
  • Level 5: The master class! Highest level of difficulty with often over 150 extremely delicate components. Perfect for absolute professionals who are not afraid of small etched parts and complex airbrush painting.

Thematic worlds: What does your heart beat for?

One of the most important purchasing criteria is of course your personal interest. Revell offers the right niche for every taste. Are you a car fan? Then you will find everything your heart desires, from classic vintage cars to modern super sports cars and massive US trucks. If you are fascinated by aviation, you can choose from detailed helicopters, civilian passenger planes or legendary military aircraft from different eras.

Fans of films and pop culture will also get their money's worth. The Star Wars Models have been an absolute bestseller for years. Whether you want to build the Millennium Falcon or an Imperial Star Destroyer, you'll be amazed by the attention to detail in these kits. In addition to Star Wars, you can also find licenses for Stranger Things, Harry Potter or Fast & Furious.

Understanding scale: How big will my model be?

The scale on the packaging tells you how large the finished model is in relation to the original. A scale of 1:24 means the model is 24 times smaller than the real vehicle. Here's a little guide:

  • 1:24 / 1:25: The standard benchmark for cars and trucks. The models are usually between 15 and 25 cm long.
  • 1:72 / 1:48 / 1:32: Typical scales for airplanes and helicopters. 1:72 is ideal for collectors with limited space, while 1:32 produces huge, detailed models.
  • 1:700 / 1:350: Often used for large ships and aircraft carriers, otherwise they would no longer fit on the living room table.
  • 1:35: The global standard for military vehicles and armored vehicles.

My tip: Before you buy, think about where you want the model to stand later. A 1:144 scale Airbus fits beautifully on a shelf, while a 1:200 scale battleship needs its own place of honor on a sideboard.

Preparation is everything: paints, glue & tools

If you choose a model from level 3, you need the right equipment. Nothing is more annoying than opening the box in anticipation and then realizing that the glue is missing. In the category Paints, glue & tools you'll find everything you need for a professional finish.

Which colors should I use?

At Revell you basically have the choice between two color systems:

  1. Aqua Color (acrylic paints): This is my clear recommendation for beginners and advanced users in 2026. They are water-based, hardly smell, dry extremely quickly and you can simply wash your brushes with tap water. They are also easy to dilute if you want to get into airbrushing later.
  2. Email Color: These classic colors in the small tin cans impress with their incredible durability and coverage. However, they dry much more slowly and you need special thinners (Color Mix) and brush cleaners (Painta Clean). They are particularly suitable for metal effects and special aging techniques (washing).

The absolute basic tool

You don't need a huge arsenal to get started, but a few things are essential. A good one Side cutters is mandatory in order to cleanly separate the components from the casting without tearing the plastic. With a sharp one Craft knife (scalpel) and a fine one File or sandpaper to remove the small burrs. I recommend this for gluing Revell Contacta Professional. This plastic glue literally welds the parts together and can be dosed precisely thanks to the fine cannula.

Expert tip: If you want to save yourself the hassle of putting things together, grab a model set. With these sets, the most important basic colors, a brush and glue are already included in the packaging. Perfect to get started straight away!

3 insider tips for a perfect result

From my years of experience as a model maker, I would like to give you three pieces of advice that make the difference between a “perfectly okay” model and a real top model:

  • Wash the branches: Before you even begin, place all of the plastic pieces (still attached to the sprue) in lukewarm water with a drop of dish soap. This allows you to remove invisible release agent residues from production. Let everything air dry. The result? The paint sticks much better later and doesn't peel off.
  • Dry fit: Never apply glue until you have tested whether the two components actually fit together flush. Put them together “dry”, check the fit and only when everything fits does the glue come into play.
  • Paint in several thin layers: The most common beginner mistake is to apply paint far too thickly in order to achieve 100% coverage immediately. This means you can hide the finest details such as rivets or joints. Dilute your colors slightly and apply two to three thin coats. The patience pays off visually in the end!

Conclusion: Your path to becoming a master model maker

Revell model making is a wonderful hobby that combines creativity, technology and relaxation in a unique way. For your start, consciously choose a model that corresponds to your level. If you're a beginner, grab a Level 2 or 3 model from your favorite theme - be it a sleek Porsche, an X-Wing Fighter or a historic aircraft. Set up a well-lit workspace, get your tools ready and take your time.

The most frequently asked questions
Which Revell model kit is best for children?

The kits from the “Build & Play” series (Level 1) and the “Click System” (Level 2) are particularly suitable for children. These models require no glue or painting. They are designed to be sturdy, snap together easily and often feature moving parts, making them great play value for the child's room once assembled.

What do the level information (1 to 5) on Revell packaging mean?

The level system indicates the level of difficulty. Levels 1 and 2 are plug-in kits without gluing or painting for beginners. Level 3 requires glue and paint and is ideal for getting started with classic model building. Levels 4 and 5, with many small components and complex painting steps, are aimed at very experienced and patient model makers.

Do I need glue and paint for every Revell kit?

No, that depends on the system you choose. For “Easy-Click” and “Build & Play” models you don’t need glue or paint. However, they are absolutely necessary for classic kits (from level 3). If you buy a "Build + Paint" model set, the most important base colors, a brush and the glue are already included in the packaging.

How do I find the right colors for my Revell model?

The required color numbers are listed exactly on every Revell packaging and in the construction instructions. In our online shop you will also find an overview of the recommended main and additional colors for each item. We advise you to use our water-based “Aqua Color” paints as they have little odor and dry very quickly.

Can I reorder missing or broken components from Revell?

Yes, Revell offers excellent customer service. If a part breaks while you are crafting or is missing from the factory, you can easily request a replacement via Department X (the Revell spare parts service). Simply have the item number of your kit and the number of the required component from the building instructions ready.

Which tools are absolutely necessary for starting plastic model making?

You don't need much to start professionally. A special model making side cutter is important to cleanly separate the parts from the casting. A craft knife (scalpel) helps remove unclean edges. To do this you will need Revell Contacta Professional glue (with a fine cannula) and a few fine brushes for detail painting.
