Sd.Kfz.9 "FAMO" with heavy artillery: A team of superlatives
At 1:72 scale it is often difficult to find kits that offer real technical depth. Most of the time, detail goes hand in hand with size. But this set proves the opposite. With an impressive 361 individual parts, the combination of the "Famo" tractor and the heavy artillery is a real "monster" on a small scale ("Braille Scale"). It's the perfect reintro for modelers who don't have a lot of shelf space but don't want to compromise on complexity. Here you don't just build a vehicle, but a complete, historical weapon system.
Why this set is in a class of its own
- Spoiled for choice: You decide which gun you build: the massive 21 cm Mortar 18 or the long-range 17 cm Cannon 18.
- Full flexibility: Present the model dynamically in the driving position on the hook of the tractor or impressively in the firing position with the carriage lowered.
- Incredible details: With 361 pieces in a small space, you will challenge your skills (level 4). The result is a delicate masterpiece.
- Complete accessories: The limbs for transport and the massive ground anchor for firefighting are included in detail.
- Historical heavyweight: The Sd.Kfz. 9 was the Wehrmacht's most powerful tractor - this model captures its power perfectly.
Building this set is a journey into mechanics. You start with the Famo's complex box drive, which was famous for its pulling power. Then you devote yourself to the heart of the game: the gun. Since the 21 cm mortar and the 17 cm cannon used the same carriage, you can exactly replicate the technical sophistication of the double recoil brakes and the massive platform car. It's a kit that requires patience, but rewards you with a density of detail unrivaled in 1:72.
Background information
The “Sonderkraftfahrzeug 9” (Famo) was the workhorse for the very heavy loads of the Wehrmacht. With its 250 hp engine, it was primarily used to recover tanks and tow the heaviest artillery pieces. Around 2,500 examples were manufactured between 1939 and 1944. The guns that could be combined here were the backbone of the heavy artillery: the 17 cm cannon could attack targets up to 28 kilometers away, while the mortar was responsible for destroying fortifications. This team impressively represents the heavy logistics of the time.

For beginners, Revell models with skill level 1 or 2 are recommended. Level 1 includes simple plug-in kits without glue, while level 2 requires basic gluing work. These models have fewer components (usually 20-50 parts) and simple color schemes. Experienced model makers should only start at level 3, as this already requires detailed painting and precise gluing work.
The packaging colors show a basic painting for quick results. However, the construction instructions contain detailed color recommendations for authentic, true-to-scale replicas. Professional model makers use the instructions' extended color palette for more realistic results. This enables both beginners to create simple projects and experts to create detailed replicas.
Revell releases new models and new editions of classic kits every month. Around 60-80 new products are released every year, including airplanes, ships, cars and RC models. The list of new products is updated at the beginning of each month. Collectors and enthusiasts should check the Revell webshop regularly, as limited editions often sell out quickly.
Revell invests significantly in product development, precise injection molds and detailed construction instructions. Each model goes through extensive design processes, tool making and quality control according to the EN 71.5 standard. The higher costs result from licensed original artwork, multilingual instructions and the use of high-quality plastics that enable precise details.
You can obtain spare parts for Revell models from official customer service or authorized dealers. Many parts can be reordered individually, although an exact kit number is required. Alternatively, specialized model building communities offer exchanges. For older, no longer produced models, 3D printing services or aftermarket manufacturers can often help.
The basic equipment includes plastic glue, side cutters, files, basic paints (black, white, gray) and brushes of various sizes. Primer, clear coat and detail brushes are recommended for advanced projects. A cutting mat set and good lighting significantly improve the quality of work. Budget beginners can start well with around 50-80 euros.
Revell RC models are differentiated according to age groups. Ready-to-run models are suitable for ages 8 and up, while kit RC models require experience in model building. Adults benefit from expandable systems and tuning options. The skill level marking helps with selection - RC beginners should start with levels 1-2, even as adults.
The Revell range includes over 400 active models, which is challenging for small retailers in terms of inventory and finances. Specialist retailers tend to focus on popular categories or regional preferences. The official Revell web shop offers the full range, while local dealers often allow special orders. Remaining stocks of older models can often be found in specialized model making shops.
We accept product suggestions via the contact form on the website. Successful proposals take into account market potential, licensability and technical feasibility. Keep in mind that developing new models takes 12-24 months. Detailed suggestions with reference material have a higher chance of success, but due to the high volume, not all ideas can be implemented.
All Revell products comply with the European toy standard and are regularly tested for harmful substances. Safety instructions in the construction instructions are mandatory and particularly concern adhesives and paints. Models below skill level 3 are designed for children aged 10 and over, higher levels require supervision or are only recommended for children aged 14 and over. The CE marking confirms conformity.
