What are model building sets and what advantages do they offer you?

If you've ever stood in front of a shelf full of kits, you're familiar with the dilemma: Which adhesive is suitable for this plastic? Which colors do the building instructions require? And which brush is suitable for delicate details or larger areas? It is precisely at this interface that high-quality products are used Model building sets on. In these so-called model sets or starter kits, you not only receive the precisely manufactured injection molded branches of your desired model, but also exactly the basic accessories that you need to start construction immediately and an attractive basic design.

The fascination of plastic model making lies in the step-by-step creation of a three-dimensional, historical or technically advanced object with your own hands. Model building sets remove the entry hurdle for you. Instead of having to separately collect several paint cans, solvent glue and tools, you simply open the box and can start right at your desk. This all-round, worry-free character makes these sets the first choice for beginners, returnees and anyone who wants to realize a self-contained project without leftover special paints.

Pre-assembled sets are also unbeatable as a gift for friends who love motorsports, aviation fans or young people interested in history. The recipient does not have to go to a specialist store to get the necessary consumables. Everything is coordinated: the adhesive formula harmonizes perfectly with the polystyrene of the components, the brush size matches the included paint pots, and the color selection faithfully covers the most striking features of the model.

The contents in detail: This is in a fully-fledged model building set

In order to properly assess the quality of a model building set, it is worth taking a closer look at the individual components that are waiting for you in the packaging. For us, every element stands for proven brand quality, which saves you frustration and guarantees visible construction success.

  • The polystyrene kit: The centerpiece is the model itself. The highly detailed individual parts are located on several casting branches (moulds). Modern injection molding technology ensures sharp-edged engravings, realistic rivet structures and an excellent fit that reduces rework to a minimum.
  • Revell Aqua Color basic colors: The sets contain the most important colors for each model in practical miniature pots. The modern Aqua Color colors are based on acrylic and water. They have little odor, are non-flammable, dry quickly and can be easily diluted with water if necessary. For starters, this is a huge advantage over classic resin-based enamel paints.
  • Revell Contacta Professional adhesive: Usually a tube or mini bottle of our tried and tested plastic glue is included. This loosens the plastic surfaces minimally and permanently welds the parts together. In many versions, the fine cannula ensures that you can dose the adhesive precisely and cleanly.
  • Quality brush: An included brush with a fine tip allows you to precisely paint both narrow edges and flat components without hair falling out or the bristles fraying.
  • Authentic decals: No model is complete without its lettering, national emblems or sponsor logos. The sets come with wafer-thin wet-slide images that slide precisely onto the painted surfaces after being soaked in water.
  • Multilingual, illustrated building instructions: The instructions guide you through the project in logical construction steps. Pictograms tell you when to glue, when to paint before assembly and where to place the decal.

Find your right skill level: from beginner to experienced hobbyist

Model building should bring joy and awaken your ambition without overwhelming you. For this reason, we work with a transparent level system that immediately shows you what technical requirements a kit places on you. Model building sets primarily cover the required levels of difficulty for beginners and advanced users.

Skill levels 1 and 2: The easy way to get started

If you have never built a model before or want to do crafts with younger family members, Level 1 and Level 2 kits are ideal. At Level 1, innovative plug-in systems (Easy-Click) are often used, which do not require any adhesive at all. The parts are already sprayed in color, and stickers replace tricky wet-slide images. Level 2 brings together a few, robust parts that are glued together and simply painted. Here you will learn the basics of deburring and assembly without getting lost in complex assemblies.

Skill Level 3: The gold standard for occasional builders and ambitious beginners

Most of our popular model building sets are in Skill level 3 settled. Up to 100 pieces await you here, which require real craftsmanship but always remain manageable. You assemble engines from individual parts, design cockpits with dashboards and insert multi-part landing gear. Gluing and precise painting before assembly becomes a fulfilling routine here. Level 3 offers the perfect balance between authentic detail and rapid construction progress - ideal for relaxed evenings or a worthwhile weekend project.

Skill levels 4 and 5: For everyone who is looking for the maximum challenge

If you are already familiar with tweezers, scalpels and putty, level 4 and 5 kits offer you highly complex constructions with 150 to over 300 individual parts. While pure Level 5 kits are often offered as solo models for professionals, many experienced model builders also like to use Level 4 model building sets in order to have a sophisticated aircraft or vehicle, including the appropriate special tones, at hand. If you want to systematically expand your collection, you can also use versatile sets in addition to individual sets Model building bundles back that perfectly link several topics together.

Discover a variety of topics: Which model suits your interests?

The world of model building sets is as diverse as the history of technology and pop culture itself. No matter what area your heart beats for - we offer you historical originals, modern milestones and fantastic icons in small, true-to-scale format.

Civil and military aviation

Airplanes have been one of the most popular subjects in plastic model making for decades. In our sets you will find legendary fighter aircraft from the era of the world wars as well as state-of-the-art interceptors of the present. The modern one is particularly popular Airbus aircraft model making, which allows you to recreate passenger giants like the A380 or A350 with their elegant wing contours and shiny airline paintwork in your living room. The combination of delicate chassis, transparent cabin windows and huge fuselage halves trains your precision and rewards you with impressive showcase pieces.

Maritime Giants: Ships and Submarines

From historic sailing ships with detailed shrouds to steel-armored warships: The Military ships model building places its own, exciting demands on your architecture. With ship models, you often work at finer scales such as 1:700 or 1:350. The aim here is to accurately position delicate gun turrets, radar systems, railings and on-board aircraft and to make the deck appear lively with different shades of color. A model building set provides you with the appropriate hull and deck colors.

Automobile icons, racing and movie cars

Do you love the smell of gasoline and sleek body design? Whether classic vintage cars, American muscle cars, exclusive super sports cars or legendary racing cars from Le Mans - car models in 1:24 scale impress with highly detailed V8 engines, fully equipped interiors and shiny chrome parts. Film enthusiasts will also find faithful replicas of famous vehicles from Hollywood blockbusters, where the appeal lies in the perfect replica of the cinematic model.

Science fiction, gaming and pop culture

Model building is no longer limited to the real history of technology. Galactic starfighters, space stations and futuristic combat walkers challenge your creativity. Lovers of distant galaxies particularly appreciate those who love details Bandai Star Wars model making, which sets new standards with its plug-in precision and iconic shapes. In 2026, the spectrum ranges from timeless cinema classics to modern digital worlds, so you can get your favorite heroes and their technology tangibly on the shelf.

Choosing the right scale: How big should your model be?

Scale not only determines the final dimensions of your finished model, but also has a significant impact on the level of detail and construction time required. When choosing a model building set, you should consider in advance how much space you have available for construction and later presentation.

  1. 1:72 – The classic for aircraft and military: At this scale, a typical fighter pilot measures around 15 to 20 centimeters. This is compact enough to build an extensive collection, but offers enough space for precise cockpit details and realistic camouflage paintwork.
  2. 1:48 – The favorite for ambitious aviation enthusiasts: Slightly larger than 1:72, 1:48 allows enormous depth for rivets, instruments and engine units. The parts are easier to grip, which makes painting small parts noticeably easier.
  3. 1:24 and 1:25 – The standard in vehicle model making: A sports car or truck of this scale is between 18 and 25 centimeters long. Here, the steering can be kept movable, the hood can be opened and the interior can be colored true to the original, right down to the pedals.
  4. 1:144 – Ideal for passenger jets and large spacecraft: Huge models such as wide-body aircraft or space shuttles require a smaller scale so that they remain manageable. 1:144 offers the ideal balance between impressive overall effect and desk usability.
  5. 1:350 and 1:700 – The world of the ocean giants: While aircraft carriers in 1:700 are about 40 centimeters long, in 1:350 they reach almost a meter. When getting started, the more compact version is often recommended in order to practice gluing the smallest guns.

Step by step to the perfect model: Our expert instructions

With a model building set you already have the most important materials in your hands. But how do you get the best visual result from your kit? In our many years of practice, a clearly structured workflow has proven to be effective, avoiding typical errors and ensuring a clean finish.

1. Preparing your workplace

Create a well-lit, dust-free work surface. A cutting mat protects your table top. Even if your kit already includes glue, brushes and paints, we recommend that you have three simple tools ready: side cutters for plastic components (or a sharp craft scalpel), tweezers for fine parts, and fine-grit sandpaper or a nail file.

2. Prepare and degrease components

During the industrial injection molding process, release agents are used to release the plastic parts from the steel molds. Sometimes minimal residues of these fats still adhere to the casting branch. Before making the first cut, wash the sprues in lukewarm water with a drop of detergent and let them air dry. This means that the paint will later adhere much better and more evenly.

3. Remove and deburr correctly

Never break components out of the frame with your fingers! This can cause cracks in the plastic or small corners to splinter. Cut the connection points (sprues) cleanly with the side cutters. Carefully smooth the remaining small edge with a craft knife or fine sandpaper. Make sure to only remove parts when they are actually supposed to be assembled or painted according to the construction instructions - this will prevent small parts from getting lost or mixed up.

4. Bonding with system and sensitivity

The included polystyrene adhesive permanently welds the components. But that also means: Less is more! A tiny drop of glue is sufficient. If you apply too much glue, it will ooze out at the seams and damage the fine surface details. Hold the pieces together firmly for 20 to 30 seconds, then allow the bond to fully cure before applying mechanical pressure.

5. Painting: Why pre-painting is often crucial

A common beginner's mistake is to completely assemble the model and only paint it at the end. You won't be able to reach internal areas such as pilot seats, cockpit fittings, landing gear shafts or transmission parts with a brush later. Always paint these components while they are still on the sprue or shortly after they have been removed. Make sure to keep adhesive surfaces free of paint, as adhesive cannot form a strong weld on layers of paint.

6. Apply wet slide decals masterfully

The included decals give your model the final, realistic touch. Roughly cut out the desired motif with scissors and place it in a bowl of lukewarm water for about 10 to 20 seconds. As soon as the backing paper is soaked, take the picture out and place it on a damp surface. After a short time, the wafer-thin motif can be gently pushed onto the model with the tip of a brush or a toothpick. Align it exactly and gently blot excess water from the center outwards with a lint-free cloth or cotton swab.

Practical tips for advanced effects and maximum longevity

Once you have internalized the basic steps, you can further enhance the appearance of your model building set with simple steps. Plastic models sometimes appear a bit sterile or toy-like without further treatment. With two uncomplicated techniques, you can instantly breathe depth and life into your creations.

The washing (depth emphasis): To highlight engravings, rows of rivets and sheet metal joints, dilute a dark color (usually black or dark brown) heavily with water and a touch of dishwashing liquid until a watery glaze is created. You brush these over the structured surfaces. The dark liquid automatically collects in the depressions due to capillary action. Immediately wipe off any excess paint on the raised surfaces with a slightly damp cloth. The result: three-dimensional shadows that give the model an immediate three-dimensionality.

Dry brushing: With this method, you take an older, flat brush and dip it in a light color (often white, light gray, or silver). Then wipe the paint off almost completely on a paper towel until the brush appears to be dry. If you now wipe the edges and raised switches of your model with quick, light movements, tiny color pigments will only stick to the raised areas. Edges stand out and the impression of worn metal or sunlight appears as if by magic.

Why model making is more than just a hobby

In an increasingly digitalized and hectic world, model making offers a healing counterpoint. When you sit down at your craft table, immerse yourself in detailed construction instructions and create a work of art millimeter by millimeter, everyday life fades into the background. Model building is proven to train fine motor skills, promote the ability to concentrate and reward your patience with a visible, lasting sense of achievement.

Whether you want to unwind after a long day at work or are planning a building project with your children at the weekend: model building sets offer you the perfect tool for creative hours. In the end, you don't just hold a decorative object in your hand, but a model whose smallest screw and color nuance you created yourself. Discover our large selection of model building sets now, choose your favorite model and start your personal building adventure today!

The most frequently asked questions
What is the exact difference between a regular kit and a model kit?

A regular model kit only contains the plastic molding branches with the components, the wetslide images and the printed construction instructions. You have to purchase consumables such as glue, paints and brushes separately. A model building set (often also referred to as a model set), on the other hand, is a complete package: In addition to the actual kit, it already provides you with the appropriate plastic glue, a suitable model building brush and the most important basic colors for the respective model. So you can get started straight away after unpacking.

Are the colors included in the model building set sufficient for the entire model?

Yes, the included paint pots are precisely sized so that you can completely design the outer surfaces and striking main areas of your model. These are the central primary colors of the model. If you want to customize the model down to the smallest detail (such as the finest switches in the cockpit or extreme weathering effects), we may recommend purchasing additional colors. However, the included color set is completely sufficient for a completely convincing overall result according to the standard construction instructions.

Which model building set is best for absolute beginners?

For absolute beginners, we recommend model building sets with skill level 2 or 3. Level 2 sets are characterized by a few, robust components and forgive minor inaccuracies when gluing. If you already have some manual skills, Level 3 model building sets with 50 to 100 parts are ideal: They offer detailed assemblies such as cockpits or landing gear, but can be assembled without frustration thanks to the precise fit and the easy-to-understand step-by-step instructions.

Which adhesive does the set come with and how do I best apply it?

Our tried and tested Revell Contacta adhesive is usually included in the sets. This polystyrene adhesive permanently welds the plastic. Always apply the adhesive extremely sparingly to the intended mating surfaces. Too much adhesive can ooze out at the joints and dissolve the engravings on the surface. For precise work on the finest components, you can put a drop of glue on an aluminum foil and apply it very thinly to the component with the tip of a toothpick.

Are the colors contained water-soluble and odorless?

In the modern Revell model building sets we use the popular Aqua Color colors. These acrylic paints are water-based, are almost completely odorless and do not contain any aggressive solvent fumes. This makes them particularly comfortable and safe for use in the living room or study at home. After use, the brush can simply be washed under running, lukewarm water while the paint is still wet.

What should I do if a component in the set is missing or damaged?

Although our production is subject to strict quality controls, in exceptional cases it may happen that a part of the casting branch is damaged or missing. In such a case, our dedicated customer service will help you easily. You can take advantage of a free spare parts service via our website by providing the item number and the required part from the construction instructions, so that nothing stands in the way of your successful completion of construction.
