Why Revell model making is the best choice for your hobby

For decades, the name Revell has been synonymous with detailed, high-quality plastic model making. If you choose a kit from our company, you are not just buying a few plastic parts. You are investing in an experience that combines concentration, fine motor skills and technical fascination in a unique way. The unsurpassed accuracy of fit, the detailed building instructions and the huge selection of models make Revell the first port of call for model builders worldwide. No matter whether you want to recreate historical aviation milestones, create impressive warships in miniature format or put the fastest sports cars in the world in your display case - here you will find exactly what your hobbyist heart desires.

Another decisive advantage is the well-thought-out ecosystem. From the first pliers to the perfect plastic glue (such as the legendary Revell Contacta Professional) to a gigantic range of water-based Aqua Color paints, Revell offers you everything from a single source. You don't have to worry about whether third-party components are compatible. Everything fits together seamlessly, which saves you frustration, especially as a beginner, and guarantees the highest quality standards as a professional. In 2026, we will also increasingly focus on more sustainable production methods and innovative click systems that will make the hobby even more accessible.

The Revell Level System: Which level of difficulty suits you?

The most important factor when choosing your new model kit is the right level of difficulty. Nothing is more demotivating than a project that exceeds your abilities or one that is finished after ten minutes without any challenge. For this reason, Revell has established a transparent level system from 1 to 5. If you understand this system, you will always make the perfect purchasing decision.

Level 1 & 2: The stress-free introduction to model building

If you've never held a model kit in your hands before or are looking for a suitable gift for children, levels 1 and 2 are the right place for you. Level 1 usually includes ours Build & Play Series. These models are sturdy, require no glue or paint, and often come with cool play features. Level 2 goes a little step further: Here you can often find the popular ones Easy click system. The components are already printed in multiple colors or dyed through. All you have to do is separate them from the sprue and put them together precisely. The result is a great model that is created without any harmful fumes from adhesives or complex painting. Perfect for quick success experiences!

Level 3: The transition to classic plastic model making

With Level 3 you enter the world of traditional model building. These kits are aimed at advanced beginners and occasional hobbyists. Here we glue, paint and work with fine decals (water slide images). The number of parts is usually in the moderate range (approx. 50 to 100 parts), so you can often complete a project in a relaxing weekend. Level 3 is ideal for practicing using a brush, correctly dispensing adhesive and cleanly deburring components. The instructions guide you step by step through the process so that you always have an overview.

Level 4 & 5: The master class for those who love details

Do you already have experience, have a steady hand and a fair amount of patience? Then levels 4 and 5 are your playground. Level 4 kits challenge you with up to 150 parts and more complex assemblies. Precise work is required here. Level 5 is the absolute premier class. These models often consist of several hundred individual parts. The finest cockpit instruments, delicate rigging on ships or highly detailed engines on cars require all of your skills. For these kits you should know or want to learn techniques such as airbrushing, washing and drybrushing. The reward for this effort is a breathtaking, museum-quality exhibit.

The innovative model building systems from Revell

In order to meet every type of hobbyist, Revell has developed various systems that go far beyond the classic plastic kit. When purchasing, pay attention to these terms to get exactly the experience you are looking for:

  • Click system (Easy-Click): As already mentioned, the star for beginners. No gluing, no painting absolutely necessary. The accuracy of the plug connections is so high that the models are absolutely stable. You can optionally paint them to make them look even more realistic, but you don't have to.
  • Build & Play: The focus here is on the play value after assembly. Robust materials, moving parts and often integrated light or sound modules make these models a highlight in every child's room.
  • Revell Engineers: This system is aimed at technically interested hobbyists. Here you not only build a shell, but also learn about working mechanics. A fantastic way to make technical understanding tangible.
  • Brick system: An exciting combination of classic clamping blocks and the typical Revell attention to detail. You build your model from proven studded bricks and still get an authentic design.
  • Build + Paint: The all-round, worry-free package. These sets already contain the most important basic colors, a brush and the required glue. You can get started right out of the box without having to buy additional accessories.

Find your favorite topic: The model building categories

The decision for the right model depends largely on your personal interests. Revell offers you an impressive variety of topics. If you are for Planes and helicopters If you decide, a journey through aviation history awaits you. From the legendary biplanes of the First World War to civilian passenger planes and ultra-modern fighter jets, you can find everything here in various scales (particularly popular: 1:72 and 1:48). When it comes to aircraft, pay attention to the space required - a 1:32 scale bomber needs a lot of space in the display case!

fans of cars and vehicles also get their money’s worth. Build your dream car that you may not (yet) be able to afford in reality. From classic muscle cars to elegant vintage cars to modern super sports cars in 1:24 scale. What is particularly required here is a shiny paint job on the body, which represents a great challenge for your painting skills.

The category Ships and maritime models often requires the most patience. Historic sailing ships with elaborate rigging or gigantic aircraft carriers on a scale of 1:350 are absolute eye-catchers. These projects often accompany you for weeks or months and are the ultimate proof of your model building skills.

Revell also offers fantastic products Licenses to. Recreate the famous spaceships from the Star Wars™ universe or get vehicles from well-known films and series on the craft table. These models are often available as easy-click kits and are therefore ideal as gifts for film fans who have never had any contact with model building before.

Important purchasing criteria: This is what you have to pay attention to

Before you put your kit in your shopping cart, you should check a few points to avoid making bad purchases. The scale is crucial. It indicates how much the original has been reduced in size. A car in 1:24 is handy and easy to detail. A 1:700 ship is relatively small, while the same 1:144 ship can reach gigantic proportions. If in doubt, measure the space on your shelf beforehand!

Also check the Scope of delivery. Is it purely a kit? Then you will also need glue, paint and tools. Or is it a “Model Set” (often recognizable by the addition of “Set” or “Build + Paint”)? Then the basic colors, a brush and glue are already included. These sets are highly recommended for beginners as they are easy on the wallet and prevent frustration due to a lack of material.

Also take a look at the ones you need colors. You will find a list of recommended color numbers on every Revell packaging and in the product descriptions in the shop. A distinction is made between main colors (which you absolutely need so that the model looks like the picture) and additional colors (for the smallest details). We recommend the Revell Aqua Color colors because they are water-based, hardly smell, dry quickly and can be easily diluted with water.

The right accessories for the perfect start

Even the best kit won't be perfect if the tools aren't right. You don't need a huge arsenal to get started, but a few basics are essential. A Side cutters for plastic is the most important tool. This allows you to clip the parts cleanly off the casting without damaging them. Please do not use scissors or household knives - the risk of breakage is too high! A Craft knife (scalpel) helps you to cleanly scrape off small plastic residues (burrs).

There is no way around the glue Revell Contacta Professional over. Its fine cannula allows precise dosing, and the adhesive literally welds the plastic parts together, which ensures extreme stability. For clear parts (such as cockpit hoods) you should use special clear glue (Revell Contacta Clear), as normal plastic glue can make the windows blind (milky) due to its fumes.

Quick overview: Your checklist before purchasing

  • Check experience level: Does the level (1-5) suit your skills?
  • Note the scale: Do you have enough space for the finished model?
  • Check accessories: Are colors and glue included (model set) or do you have to order them separately?
  • Prepare tools: Do you have side cutters, craft knives and brushes on hand?
  • Schedule time: Take time and rest for your project - model building is relaxation, not a race!

If you follow all of these tips, nothing will stand in the way of your success. Revell Modellbau offers you the perfect symbiosis of relaxation, technical challenges and the joy of creating. Use our filters in the shop to search specifically for your desired level, your preferred scale or your favorite topic. The most frequently asked questions
