An interceptor born of air superiority

The Grumman F-14 Tomcat was the backbone of US naval aviation for decades. Developed as a heavy carrier-based interceptor, it was intended to shield entire fleet formations over long distances - two engines, two crew, a radar with enormous range. The pilot in front, the radar intercept officer behind: This duo shapes the Tomcat myth to this day.

Their ability to change wing geometry in flight made them unique. Widely spread, the wings provide maximum lift at low speeds - exactly what catapult takeoff and landing on a short carrier deck require. Arrowed close to the fuselage, the same machine becomes a slim arrow for speeds beyond Mach 2. No other fighter aircraft has demonstrated this change in shape so visibly.

In 1986, a film finally made the Tomcat a legend. Suddenly everyone beyond the aviation scene knew this silhouette: the two tailplanes, the widely spaced engine nozzles, the distinctive squadron insignia. For an entire generation, the F-14 is the reason they started building models in the first place.
